01 In this
gallery it was planned to respond to the arid environment of
Australia, specifically by incorporating an activity the guests
would have to complete upon returning home and nurture for some
time after. As this gallery directly connected to the gallery
01, it was decided that a direct connection with that space could
generate a set of dynamic sequential events. The boxes that were
planned to drop with balloons in gallery 01 would be filled with
seeds that would grow in the harsh climate and
be a source of moisture. The public would take those seeds as
well as soil from gallery 04 and be encourage to grow their 'gift
seeds'. Formal investigations into the shape of the sand formations
included those similar to Ginkakuji (Silver Temple)
in Kyoto, Japan.

02 Due to the time restrictions
for installation and dismantling, it was decided that filling the
entire 152 square metre space with 10cm of sand would be too large
of an undertaking. The students began to discuss other materials
that might fit within the theme the Australian 'Child Overboard
Scandal'. In addition, students Kate Jackson and Jenny Ford began
to work extensively with Matthew Butler on developing a range
of furniture for all of the galleries. Butler devised a design
that would utilize an inexpensive material and be easily manufactured,
as well as be significant to the refugee issues of the the central
theme. The five piece, flat pack stool became an effective design.
