Manifest was
an elective course in the Interior Design program coordinated
by Christopher
Kaltenbach, Lecturer and Erin O'Callaghan, Artistic Director
of HE&EVE.
With a group of 13 students from the Interior
Design program, a series of environments were constructed
that not only challenged the conventions of sensory space but questioned
the role designers play in this politically and socially volatile,
and environmentally unstable period of Australian history.
The propositions that were developed from this
elective were used to generate a one night event/installation staged
at the Australian Centre for Contemporary
Art (ACCA) on July
28th, 2004.
A group of innovative national and international
cultural producers were invited to collaborate with the students,
they included furniture designer Matthew Butler
of Bluesquare,
chef George Calombaris, new media designer and photographer Ross
Hipwell, Tokyo designer Takeshi Ishiguro, and audio/visual designers
Gregory
More and Jeremy Yuille.
The students
were Sebastian
Agricol, James Carey, Elena Critchley, Sun-Young Cho, Soledad
Herrera, Kate Jackson, Raphael Kilpatrick, Mi Kyung Kim, Peter
Knight, Christine Lilley, Mijeong Lee, Adam Paikos
The site given to the elective was ACCA. It is
made up of four galleries. The design propositions correspond to the four galleries of ACCA.
